Tax refunds from 2020 are owing to about 34,900 Michigan individuals, for a total of $38,274,800. Many Michiganders have not yet claimed their overdue money, with a median refund of $932 and an average refund of $976. The deadline for filing tax returns related to unclaimed 2020 tax refunds has been moved up to May 17th, providing people with an opportunity to recover money they may have missed.

IRS Commissioner Urges Taxpayers to Secure Overdue Refunds Before Time Runs Out

Commissioner of the IRS Danny Werfel exhorts taxpayers to make sure they don’t miss out on their refund claims, stressing the need to move quickly to avoid running out of time. People are urged to obtain the required paperwork, such as W-2s, 1098s, 1099s, or 5498s, from their banks or employment to make the procedure easier. They can also obtain tax forms and instructions via the IRS website or helpline, as well as make a free online request for a wage and income transcript. The money may return to the United States if these returns are not claimed within the allotted time. Treasury, emphasizing the need of moving quickly to obtain overdue refunds.
