Mississippi Senate Approves Scaled-Down Medicaid Expansion

Conservative Principles Shape Revised House Bill 1725, Hinging on 2024 Presidential Outcome

According to Clarion Ledger the Mississippi Senate passed a smaller version of Medicaid expansion. It’s based on conservative ideas and depends on who wins the 2024 presidential election. This revised House Bill 1725 backed by 36 votes to 16 aims to help about 80,000 of Mississippi’s poorest workers. But it needs approval from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Lawmakers hope former President Donald Trump who supported similar work rules will win giving the bill a better chance.

Republican lawmakers mostly like the Medicaid expansion bill but Democrats aren’t happy. They want more people to qualify for Medicaid and fewer paperwork hassles. Democrats tried to change the Medicaid expansion bill to help more people and make it less strict but they didn’t get enough votes. Even though some Democrats aren’t thrilled with the Medicaid expansion bill they still voted for it because it’s better than nothing. The Medicaid expansion bill now goes to Governor Tate Reeves who will decide whether to approve it or talk more about it with other lawmakers.
