Former Teacher Convicted of Child Sex Crimes
Verdict Announced by State Attorney’s Office
According to True Crime Daily, in Mount Dora, Florida former high school teacher Dmitri Kostyunin was convicted of child sex crime offenses against an Italian foreign exchange student he was responsible for. The jury found Kostyunin guilty of sexual battery contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing cannabis to someone under 18. The child sex crime verdict was declared by the Florida State Attorney’s Office for the Fifth Judicial Circuit and Kostyunin is now awaiting sentencing.

Importance of Protecting Minors and Ensuring Justice
The child sex crimes case unfolded when officers received a complaint of possible sexual battery against a juvenile at Kostyunin’s residence in October 2023. The victim of child sex crimes an Italian exchange student reported the crimes to family members who then informed law enforcement. Lake County Sheriff’s Office detectives interviewed the victim who revealed that Kostyunin had provided them with cannabis-infused chocolates and alcohol during a movie night. Despite the victim’s refusal, Kostyunin persisted in attempting to give a massage and later performed sexual acts while the victim was under the influence. Kostyunin admitted to providing the juvenile with cannabis-infused candy, wine, and beer and acknowledged his wrongdoing after reportedly blacking out. His actions were condemned by Bill Gladson the state attorney for the fifth judicial circuit who emphasized the breach of trust and the harm inflicted on the victim. The child sex crimes case highlights the importance of safeguarding minors and holding perpetrators of child sex crimes accountable for their actions.
