Cuyahoga County Grand Jury Indicts Householder on 10 New Felony Charges

Ohio AG Yost Reveals New Allegations Against Ex-Speaker Householder

Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder on ten new felony counts, bringing him yet another round of legal troubles while he is incarcerated at Elkton Federal Correctional Institution. Attorney General of Ohio Dave Yost revealed these allegations, which include alleged campaign fund mismanagement, ethics violations, and a theft in office charge that could result in a permanent ban from holding public office in the state. According to the indictment, Householder concealed significant financial facts and paid his legal fees in his federal case using money from the campaign.

The state’s move builds on what was previously labeled the biggest corruption case in Ohio history. It concerns a $60 million bribery scheme that Householder coordinated, involving FirstEnergy Corp., located in Akron. The plan was to get a $1 billion bailout for two nuclear power plants passed. In addition to Householder, other prominent individuals have also been subject to legal action, including as the dismissed executives of FirstEnergy and the former chief utility regulator of Ohio. The indictments represent a new phase in Ohio’s efforts to hold those responsible for the corruption scheme accountable and improve the state’s political environment, with Householder currently serving a 20-year term.
