New Developments Tackle Affordable Housing Crisis in Chicago
New Affordable Housing Projects Bring Hope to Chicago Neighborhoods
In Chicago, efforts are underway to make housing more affordable for families in different parts of the city. Two new developments, the Janet L. Smith Apartments in West Pullman and the 5853 N. Broadway development in Edgewater, are part of a plan to increase the number of affordable units. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced that these projects, along with 11 others will receive funding through federal low income housing tax credits.
The 5853 N. Broadway development aims to address the need for affordable housing in the Edgewater area, where rising rents have displaced many families. With 90 units ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms the development will cater to families earning at or below 60% of the median area income. Additionally, plans include environmentally sustainable features such as solar panels and a green roof to mitigate stormwater runoff.

New Interfaith Housing Development Brings Affordable Housing and Support Services to Chicago’s Far South Side
Meanwhile, on the Far South Side, the Interfaith Housing Development Corp. is constructing a 36 unit apartment building with permanent supportive housing services. This project, located at 505 W. 119th St., seeks to address the city’s homelessness issue by providing affordable housing along with essential social services. The development is named after Janet L. Smith, a dedicated advocate for housing issues honoring her significant contributions to the field.
