Senate Strikes Last-Minute Deal to Prevent Shutdown Amid Funding Deadline Miss

The Senate didn’t meet the deadline to fund the government by midnight which could have led to a partial shutdown. But they made a deal at the last minute to vote on a $1.2 trillion spending package early Saturday morning. This deal came after pressure from Senate Republicans who wanted to vote on several changes. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer agreed to let Republicans have 13 amendment votes to avoid the shutdown.

Schumer said it was a difficult day but they got an agreement to fund the government which is beneficial to the country. However, due to the amendment votes the final vote on the budget package was pushed back until early Saturday morning. The plan which includes financing for defense, homeland security and labor has already cleared the Republican-controlled House.
