Mother’s Horrific Vacation Choice: Leaving Toddler Alone Leads to Life Sentence
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Announces Life Sentence for Kristel Candelario’s Neglect
A 32 year old mother, Kristel Candelario has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after leaving her 16 month old daughter, Jailyn Candelario, alone at home to die while she went on vacation last year. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley announced the sentencing on March 18. Candelario pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and endangering children in February. On June 6, 2023, Candelario left her daughter alone at their home near Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street while she traveled to Detroit and Puerto Rico. When she returned on June 16, she found her child unresponsive in a Pack-N-Play pen. Emergency services were called, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cleveland Division of Fire. Police found the Pack-N-Play soiled with urine and feces, and the toddler was extremely dehydrated at the time of her death.

Chief Dorothy Todd’s Sorrowful Remarks on the Heightened Pain of Child Homicide
Prosecutor O’Malley expressed sadness for the loss of Jailyn, criticizing Candelario’s actions as extremely selfish. Cleveland Division of Police Chief Dorothy Todd also commented, highlighting the heightened sorrow when a child is involved in a homicide. This heartbreaking incident reminds us of how crucial parental care is and the terrible outcomes when it is neglected.
