Oklahoma Senate Passes Budget Resolution Based on Nearly $14 Billion for Appropriations

Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat Emphasizes $11.6 Billion in Recurring Revenue in the Budget

The Oklahoma Senate has taken a significant step forward by passing a budget resolution, based on nearly $14 billion certified for appropriations. Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat highlighted that about $11.6 billion of this amount is recurring revenue, with the resolution factoring in a $312.9 million cut in grocery tax revenue. A major portion of the budget, over $5.7 billion, is allocated to education, with significant funds earmarked for the State Department of Education, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

Senate Leaders Emphasize Commitment to Transparency in Budgeting Process

Senate leaders stressed their dedication to transparency in budgeting, with Treat commending the new measures. According to Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Roger Thompson, the spending plan prioritizes crucial sectors such as education, public safety, transportation, and healthcare, aiming to prioritize Oklahomans’ needs. Nonetheless, concerns were raised by some senators, including Sen. Carri Hicks, regarding the adequacy of investments in vital areas like education, public safety, mental health, and childcare. The resolution now awaits review in the House, signifying a pivotal stage in Oklahoma’s budget process.
