Rep. Vargas Proposes Expansion of State Earned Income Tax Credit to Include Currently Ineligible Individuals

Rep. Andy X. Vargas and Advocates Push for Inclusive Tax Credit Access for Immigrant Families

Last Thursday, Rep. Andy X. Vargas and groups supporting immigrants pushed for a change to a tax credit. This credit helps poor families and kids do better in school. Right now, about 21,000 to 26,000 families can’t get this help because of their immigration status. Vargas, who’s part of a group called the legislative Black and Latino Caucus, said it’s not fair and everyone should get a fair chance.

Budget Proposal Seeks Inclusive Tax Credit Reform, Advocates Stress Benefits Outweigh Costs

They want this change to be part of the budget for 2025. The new rule would let immigrant workers, who already pay taxes, get this credit even if they don’t have a Social Security number. It would also help families where some members have papers and others don’t. This change could cost the state around $22.6 million to $28 million. But people say it’s worth it because it helps a lot of families. They believe Massachusetts can afford it, even with money being tight. They hope lawmakers will listen and make this change happen soon.
