Lawmakers Deliberate Tax Credit Proposal to Bolster Portland Sea Dogs and Hadlock Field
Lawmakers are considering a proposal to give the Portland Sea Dogs a tax credit of up to $2 million for upgrading their baseball facilities at Hadlock Field. The proposal aims to support the Sea Dogs, Maine’s Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in meeting Major League Baseball’s requirements. Senate President Troy Jackson, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the economic and community importance of keeping the Sea Dogs in Maine despite some criticism of using public funds for stadium upgrades.
The planned upgrades at Hadlock Field include adding essential facilities like batting cages, weight rooms and improved locker rooms. Sea Dogs President Geoff Iacuessa stressed the teams commitment to staying in Maine but highlighted the risk of relocation if they fail to meet MLB standards by 2025. Supporters of the bill, including parents, employees and community members, testified to the Sea Dogs’ positive impact on the economy and the community, underscoring the importance of preserving the team’s presence in Portland.

Although the Taxation Committee took no immediate action on the proposal, there was overwhelming support for the bill during the hearing. Proponents highlighted the Sea Dogs’ contributions to job creation, economic output, and charitable activities. With the deadline to meet MLB standards looming, the tax credit could play a crucial role in ensuring the Sea Dogs remain a fixture in Maine’s sports landscape while benefiting the local economy and community.
