Mayor Adams and Speaker Adrienne Adams Unite to Tackle Wage Disparity for Human Services Workers
City Leaders Commit to Addressing Wage Disparity with $740 Million Boost for Nonprofit Human Services Workers
Daily News – In a joint effort, Mayor Adams and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams revealed plans to inject over $740 million into boosting the salaries of tens of thousands of nonprofit human services employees. Although slightly below the 16% initially requested by the Just Pay group the increase is being welcomed as a significant step forward in improving the financial stability of these workers who often find themselves living at or near the poverty line.
The NYC investment addresses a long-standing issue of wage disparity within the human services sector where workers are contracted by the city to provide essential social programs and services. Data from Just Pay indicates that a large portion of these workers earn below the city’s poverty threshold. With this funding commitment, the city aims to rectify the situation by implementing a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) program benefiting approximately 80,000 workers and providing them with much needed financial assistance.
