The Other Side of Houston: Exploring the Struggles of 2024 Worst Neighborhoods

Unveiling Houston’s Worst Neighborhoods: A Closer Look at the ‘Snackability’ Ranking

Income, Crime, and Unemployment: The Factors Shaping Houston’s Troubled Neighborhoods

According to Southwest Journal, in a recent development, Houston, Texas has been grappling with a concerning surge in its homicide rate. This alarming trend has led many to reconsider their perception of the city and its various neighborhoods. To help shed light on this issue, we have compiled a list of the worst neighborhoods in Houston based on data from RoadSnacks for 2022.

The ranking was decided by looking at things like how much money people make, how many people don’t have jobs, how much crime there is, and how expensive homes are in 26 neighborhoods in Houston with more than 6,000 people. Each neighborhood got a score called ‘Snackability’. The ones at the bottom are areas where there are problems. These areas have a lot of crimes like stealing cars and robbing people, even in the daytime. Despite the hard work of Houston’s 3,500 police officers, crime keeps going up in the city. This makes Houston one of the few big cities in the U.S. where crime is getting worse.

Focusing on Caution: Highlighting Areas Requiring Extra Attention in the City

It’s important to know that Houston isn’t just about these troubled neighborhoods. There are many lively and safe areas where people can have fun, like going to the Montrose Sunday market or the Greater Heights Crawfish Festival. But today, we’re concentrating on the areas where you need to be careful and pay extra attention.

Unveiling Houston’s 5 Worst Neighborhoods

1. Far North. This neighborhood lives up to its name as it’s located on the northern edge of the city. Far North is a bit strange. There aren’t many job opportunities here, with only about 5.5% of people without jobs. But the jobs that are available don’t pay much, only around $30,316 a year. However, there’s a positive side. Far North is great for shopping, with lots of stores around. And if you like finding good deals, you’ll be happy with the low home prices here, which are around $52,586 on average.

2. Northeast. In the middle of Houston, we’re straightforward. If you live in the northeast part of the city, your neighborhood is simply called “Northeast”. Nothing fancy, just simple. Northeast is perfect for golfers, with the Brock Park Golf Course nearby. And if you love nature, Lake Houston is not far away. But here’s the thing: with an average income of $32,777, you might need to reconsider before going golfing or having a picnic by the lake.

3. Southeast. Another neighborhood that’s named after where it’s located. It’s home to some of Houston’s popular places like the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. But don’t be fooled by these attractions. Southeast’s economy isn’t very lively, which is why it’s number 3 on our list. With about 6.1% of people without jobs and an average income of $41,297, it’s not the best place for finding opportunities. But at least the homes here are affordable, with prices typically under $100,000.

4. East End.  East End is like a history book that’s alive. It is where modern Houston started, and it was the capital of Texas when it was independent from Mexico in the 1800s. It used to be a busy place for business and industry. Today, East End still has good things like lots of food, shops, and the Gus Wortham Golf Course. But it’s not as economically strong as it used to be, so finding a good-paying job here can be hard.

5. North.  If going to Far North seems like too much of a journey you might consider North Houston instead. But be careful it is ranked as the fifth least desirable neighborhood in Houston for 2022. North Houston’s situation is common. Its economy is not very clear like a foggy morning. While there are jobs available, with an unemployment rate of 4.5%, the pay they offer might not be great.
