Sacramento County Launches Pilot Program to Tackle Poverty and Inequality

CBS NewsSacramento County is launching a new pilot program to help African American and Native American families living in poverty. The program, which involves giving families $725 a month as guaranteed basic income, aims to address disparities and support struggling households. Initially, some members of the county Board of Supervisors were skeptical, but after considering the potential impact, they decided to support the pilot.

The decision to set the monthly payment at $725 was influenced by data showing significant challenges faced by African American children, who make up a disproportionate number of calls to Child Protective Services. The county hopes that providing financial support will open up opportunities and reduce disparities.

By tracking data on who receives the payments and how they are spent, the county aims to refine the program as it progresses. Officials believe that if successful, the program could help prevent a potential pipeline to homelessness, particularly for vulnerable groups like foster youth. This initiative reflects a commitment to addressing systemic issues and providing support to those in need within the community.
