Kia and Hyundai Settlement Offers Relief to Owners Affected by Lack of Theft-Deterrent Devices

The US Sun – In a recent development, owners of Kia or Hyundai vehicles have an opportunity to claim payments following a settlement in a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed by plaintiffs, alleged that the car manufacturers failed to equip certain models with adequate theft-deterrent devices. This led to increased vulnerability to theft causing financial losses and insurance complications for owners.

As part of the settlement, Kia and Hyundai have agreed to pay a total of $145 million to affected customers. Eligible claimants, who purchased or leased a Kia or Hyundai between 2011 and 2022, could receive payments of up to $3,375. These payments are categorized into three levels: partial reimbursement for total losses, insurance related reimbursement or compensation for other expenses.

Settlement Notification Process Begins: Kia and Hyundai Customers Encouraged to Claim Relief

Affected individuals are expected to be notified this week with instructions on how to submit their claims. This settlement aims to provide relief to customers who experienced losses or inconvenience due to the absence of theft-deterrent devices in their vehicles.

When to Claim?

Owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models have until January 11, 2025 to submit claims for settlement funds following a class-action lawsuit over the absence of theft-deterrent devices. The issue gained attention with the emergence of a TikTok trend dubbed Kia boys, highlighting the ease of stealing these vehicles. In response, Hyundai and Kia have introduced software updates and provided wheel locks to enhance security. Despite these efforts, the manufacturers maintain that criminals bear responsibility for vehicle thefts, deflecting blame from themselves.
