Hundreds Miss Out on Unclaimed Property Tax Refunds in Riverside County
My News LA – Nearly $800,000 in property tax refunds is set to be deposited by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors after hundreds of business owners and residents failed to claim their owed money. Treasurer-Tax Collector Matthew Jennings revealed that these refunds covering tax years 2013 to 2018, belong to 793 individuals and businesses. The board will decide on transferring this amount to the county General Fund.
The amounts per recipient vary, with one entity owed as little as $10.77 and another entitled to as much as $20,783. Despite efforts including newspaper advertisements and hiring a billing support service, only 29 people responded to file claims out of which only 20 were verified as legitimate. Notably, William Lyon Homes Inc. appeared 191 times in the documents with over $8,000 available for distribution.
Unclaimed Property Tax Refunds: Riverside County’s Efforts and Unanswered Questions
In previous years, the board had postponed actions to allow more time for claim filing. Notices about the unclaimed funds were circulated as early as April 2017. When refund checks are sent but returned they are held in a separate account. The reason behind the lack of response from more prospective recipients remains unclear, leaving a significant sum unclaimed.
