According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture the food prices are expected to rise by 2.9 percent this year and following a significant 5.8 percent increase in 2023. To cope with these rising costs many individuals and families are turning to SNAP and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program which provides monthly benefits to help households afford groceries.
SNAP is a federal program that assists households in need by providing them with funds to purchase food. Last year there are 42 million people participated in SNAP with eligibility based on income and household size. However, there are restrictions including time limits for certain adults,\ which may present challenges especially for older individuals seeking stable employment. Exemptions exist for individuals with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness, and veterans among others.

To get SNAP benefits people need to apply at their local office. Benefits are given through Electronic Benefits Transfer cards which can be used to buy food at approved stores but there have been reports of fraud so steps are being taken to make EBT cards more secure. There is a plan to introduce EBT cards with chips to help stop fraud and keep the program fair.
