Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear commended the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Vehicle Investigations Branch for their exceptional efforts, which led to the recovery of over $5.2 million in cargo theft property and the dismantling of an organized theft ring responsible for over $10 million in theft over an 18-month period.
Success in Combatting Cargo Theft
The KSP’s diligent efforts resulted in 16 cargo theft investigations, leading to 10 federal indictments and the arrest of seven individuals. Cargo theft incidents targeted multiple points in the supply chain, including in transit and storage facilities, with a noticeable focus on the food and beverage industry and a rise in copper theft utilizing electronic crimes and identity theft tactics.
The collaborative work between the KSP, local, state, and federal agencies facilitated the recovery of stolen shipments and subsequent arrests. Notably, two KSP investigators, Detective Steve Spurlock and Criminal Intel Analyst Gary Thomas, received awards at the Midwest Cargo Security Council Summit for their exceptional contributions to combating cargo theft operations.
Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr. commended the KSP’s leadership in combating organized cargo theft crimes, emphasizing their success in thwarting high-value shipment thefts, which often exploit supply chain vulnerabilities, causing significant financial losses.
