Annual SNAP Fraud Prevention Act Introduces Chip Technology to Combat Theft and Safeguard Food Assistance Funds
A new law called the Enhanced Cyber Security for SNAP Act is being proposed by Senators from Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana according to the report of My HomeTown. This law aims to stop people from stealing money from SNAP a program that helps families buy food. Every year, criminals steal a lot of money from SNAP which is meant to help people in need. It also says that states need to give out new cards with this technology within two years. After four years, states can’t give out old-style cards anymore. Instead, they have to give out cards with this new technology called a chip to make it harder for bad people to steal money from SNAP.

The law also wants to help small stores and markets in areas where it’s hard to find healthy food. It gives them money to get better machines for SNAP cards. If someone’s SNAP card is stolen or broken, the law says states must give them a new one quickly and for free. It also says states must make it easy for people to check their SNAP balance using their phone or the internet. This new law hopes to stop a lot of the stealing that happens with SNAP money every year.
