$14.4 Million Apple ‘Batterygate’ Settlement Impact on Canadian iPhone Users

Apple has agreed to pay $14.4 million to settle a lawsuit in Canada related to the “Batterygate” controversy. This issue arose when Apple intentionally slowed down older iPhones as their batteries aged a move undertaken in 2017 to prevent unexpected shutdowns. However the company did not transparently communicate this change during a software update leading to criticism. As part of the settlement eligible iPhone users in Canada may receive compensation ranging from $17.50 to $150 CAD depending on the number of claims. The covered iPhone models include 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, and 7 Plus, with specific iOS versions downloaded before December 21, 2017. It’s important to note that residents of Quebec are excluded from this settlement.

Similar events unfolded in the United States, where Apple initiated payments totaling $500 million to iPhone users earlier this year to resolve a comparable issue. This situation arose from Apple’s lack of transparency regarding the slowing down of iPhone performance due to aging batteries. The company faced criticism for its actions and subsequently issued an apology. Additionally, Apple reduced the cost of battery replacements and provided users with the option to disable the performance-throttling feature. The recent court approval in Canada now ensures the $14.4 million apple ‘batterygate’ settlement for affected iPhone users.
