According to The Washington Times, In a shocking turn of events, Haiti’s main prison was breached by armed gangs overnight resulting in a mass chaos jailbreak and leaving at least three people dead. This incident highlights the worsening violence plaguing the country particularly in the capital Port au Prince. Prime Minister Ariel Henry‘s absence abroad seeking support for a UN backed security force has left a void in leadership and allowing gangs to assert greater control.
The prison break saw hundreds of inmates fleeing and leaving behind chaos and confusion. The scene at the prison entrance depicted a grim reality with bodies lying on the ground and guards conspicuously absent. Among those who chose to remain in the prison were 18 former Colombian soldiers implicated in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Their plea for help via social media underscores the dire situation faced by those still trapped inside the facility where violence and uncertainty prevail.
