China vs. U.S. for Global Diplomatic Race
According to Eurasia Review, the 2024 Global Diplomacy Index by the Lowy Institute, China leads globally in the number of embassies and consulates, closely followed by the United States. The competition for influence between the two nations is intensifying especially in the Pacific region, where they compete for support from small island nations. China’s diplomatic power is growing in Africa and the Pacific while the U.S. maintains strong ties in Europe, North and Central America, and South Asia. The rivalry has escalated notably after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
