Saturday Night Science recently conducted a study to rank the worst Houston suburbs for 2024 based on population, median income, unemployment rate, and median home value. Here’s a more detailed look at the top 10 worst Houston suburbs:
1. Galena Park – With a population of 10,641, Galena Park tops the list as the worst Houston suburb. It has the lowest median income of $45,614 and the highest unemployment rate of 14.3%, coupled with the lowest median home value of $161,745.
2. South Houston – With a population of 16,169, South Houston closely follows Galena Park with the second-lowest median income of $51,006 and the second-highest unemployment rate of 9.2%. It also has the second-lowest median home value of $190,485.
3. Baytown – With a population of 84,449, Baytown has the sixth-lowest median income of $61,158, the third-highest unemployment rate of 9.2%, and the fourth-lowest median home value of $224,259.
4. Pasadena – With a population of 150,620, Pasadena has the seventh-lowest median income of $64,698, the fourth-highest unemployment rate of 8.9%, and the third-lowest median home value of $214,267.
5. Arcola – With a population of 2,604, Arcola has the tenth-lowest median income of $74,268, the fifth-highest unemployment rate of 8.1%, and the seventh-lowest median home value of $251,270.
6. Humble – With a population of 16,563, Humble has the fifth-lowest median income of $58,581 and the eighth-highest unemployment rate of 6.1%. It also has the ninth-lowest median home value of $254,424.
7. Webster – With a population of 12,297, Webster has the fourth-lowest median income of $58,555 and the fifteenth-highest unemployment rate of 4.8%. It also has the eighth-lowest median home value of $252,505.
8. La Porte – With a population of 35,782, La Porte has the thirteenth-lowest median income of $79,193 and the tenth-highest unemployment rate of 5.3%. It also has the fifth-lowest median home value of $247,850.
9. Richmond – With a population of 11,931, Richmond has the third-lowest median income of $51,832 and the twelfth-highest unemployment rate of 5.0%. It also has the eighteenth-lowest median home value of $381,647.
10. Alvin – With a population of 27,325, Alvin has the eighth-lowest median income of $68,266 and the twenty-second-highest unemployment rate of 3.0%. It also has the sixth-lowest median home value of $248,545.
While these suburbs may have made it to the top 10 worst list, it’s important to note that they still have unique qualities that attract residents. Nevertheless, this study serves as a wake-up call for these suburbs to identify improvement areas and work towards improving them.
