A man was charged after he started a fire early this month and killed a 43-year-old woman. The suspect is 31 years old and arrested by the officials.
In the early hours of Saturday, February 3rd, Flint Township Police responded to a home on Helber Street after Angela Craig called 911 to report that Chad Egan was repeatedly banging on her door and she wanted him to leave. The officers spoke with Egan at the scene, and he left. However, they failed to make contact with Craig after the incident. Approximately one hour later, at around 4 a.m., police and firefighters were called to Craig’s home for a residential fire. On their way to the victim’s home, emergency responders passed Egan as he was walking on Lavelle Road. According to a news release from Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, this incident occurred.
Flint Township Fire Department found Craig inside her home. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to a police news release. The victim died of smoke inhalation. Her cat and dog also perished in the fire. Leyton announced that police returned to Lavelle Road, located Egan, and took him into custody.
Investigators obtained surveillance footage that showed Egan walking multiple times toward and away from Craig’s home and in the front yard of an adjacent abandoned house.
Officers saw Egan walking across the street holding a lighter just before the footage showed the fire spreading from Craig’s home to neighboring houses.
