Michigan State Launches MI Vehicle Rebate to Save Drivers Thousands on Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Upon the top of the federal tax credit, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has allocated $25 million to provide electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid purchasers with rebates of up to $2,500, for a potential total savings of $10,000. The objective of the initiative is to foster environmentally sustainable vehicle adoption, support the automotive sector of the state, and promote pure mobility.

Under the new MI Vehicle Rebate program, Michigan drivers can benefit from substantial cost savings on new electric and hybrid vehicles according to the article released by The Sun. Governor Whitmer has emphasized the program’s potential to lower costs for families by thousands of dollars, while also contributing to the development and leadership of future mobility and electrification. The state rebate, when combined with the federal tax credit, results in a significant discount of up to $10,000 on qualifying vehicles, making eco-friendly transportation more accessible to Michigan residents.

Furthermore, the MI Vehicle Rebate program reinforces its support for the local automotive industry by offering higher rebates to vehicles manufactured in facilities with union-protected workers. Electric vehicles made in such facilities are eligible for a full $2,500 state rebate, while non-union-made battery electric vehicles (BEVs) can receive a $2,000 discount. Moreover, the program extends support to gas-powered vehicles, providing rebates of up to $1,500 for union-made and $1,000 for newly made gas-powered vehicles, underscoring its inclusive approach to promoting clean mobility.

The MI Vehicle Rebate program has garnered enthusiastic support from key stakeholders, including the Michigan Automobile Dealers Association, which recognizes the initiative’s potential to make cutting-edge technology more accessible to a broader segment of the population.

By contacting the Department of Treasury at the time of purchase, dealerships can swiftly process the tax rebate voucher and reduce the vehicle’s cost, drawing from the $25 million allocated by the state. Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist has expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to motivate Michigan motorists to embrace cleaner, modern mobility, to support the state’s auto workers and manufacturers.
