Warships from China and the US Engage in Rival Exercises Amid Elevated Tensions in the Disputed South China Sea
As US and Chinese warships exercised in the South China Sea, tensions rose. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command of China sent its naval and air force for two days of “routine patrols” in the area. In response to USS Carl Vinson-led aircraft carrier strike group maneuvers with the Philippine Navy. Beijing has criticized “provocative moves” by the US and its ally, the Philippines, prompting increased military activity.
China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, criticized the US and Philippine military drills as “provocative military activities” intended to display their strength. He highlighted the negative impact of these actions on managing and controlling maritime situations and related disputes in the region. Beijing called on the involved countries to halt their “irresponsible actions” and honor the endeavors of regional nations in upholding peace and stability in the South China Sea.
China reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, despite the rejection of its claims over nearly the entire South China Sea by an international tribunal.
