American-Philippine Exercises Rival Chinese “Live Fire Drills”

U.S. and Philippine naval maneuvers followed China’s “live fire drills” over the South China Sea, where disputes over territorial seas have escalated. As both countries increase their military presence in the region, tensions have risen due to competing naval operations.

The chief of the Philippine military’s public affairs office confirmed the presence of two Chinese vessels “shadowing” the U.S.-Philippine exercises from a distance. China’s Assertions and U.S. Response

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin condemned the exercises as detrimental to managing the maritime situation and related disputes, emphasizing Beijing’s determination to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. The U.S., in partnership with local and international allies, has regularly countered Beijing’s efforts to establish control over the South China Sea.

Denied claims and U.S. involvement have resulted in ongoing tensions that cause disagreements within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc. A maritime area in China, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Brunei dispute has become a significant hotspot, demonstrating the complexity of the Asia-Pacific region.

Since Washington keeps holding exercises to show its presence and support for freedom of passage, the South China Sea is still essential to world politics.
