Unpacking the Overpayment Scam: A General Contractor’s View

The bewildered homeowner’s plight gained widespread attention following her decision to publicize the captivating story. A concerned general contractor, who opted to remain anonymous, believes that the “theft” of the driveway was orchestrated as part of an “overpayment” scam targeting contractors.

The scheme involves scammers, often without proper licenses, soliciting bids for unsolicited work on newly listed homes. After negotiating a price with the contractor after sending a check for more than promised, the scammer seeks a return. When the cheque bounces, the contractor is in danger.

Given the nature of this malicious ploy, Florida deputies have faced significant challenges in their investigation, as the scammer is believed to have used a burner phone and a fake identity. Despite this setback, a silver lining emerged for Brochu, as a generous offer from Cox Media Group provided her with a free replacement driveway after her story garnered local attention. Amidst the unexpected kindness, Brochu has pledged to donate the funds she collected through a GoFundMe campaign to a local charity, reflecting her resilient spirit in the face of adversity.
