In Ukraine, a senior Defense Ministry official has been arrested on suspicions of embezzling $40 million through a contract for artillery shells. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) revealed that the official allegedly colluded with an export company for the purchase of shells but later struck a more cost-effective deal directly with the manufacturer, omitting intermediaries. This revision significantly slashed costs and delivery time.
Allegations and Investigations
Investigations by the SBU unveiled a scheme where the defense official prolonged a costly contract, directing $40 million to a foreign intermediary. The SBU claims to possess substantial evidence supporting these alleged fraudulent actions.
If proven guilty, the implicated official faces a possible 15-year prison sentence. The Ministry of Defense aims to recover the misappropriated funds, considering legal measures to terminate the contract and reclaim the money.
This development follows the dismissal of Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, replaced by Rustem Umerov amidst corruption scandals in the Defense Ministry. The United States has urged Ukraine to intensify its anti-corruption efforts, linking economic aid to institutional reforms.
