Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed on December 5 the extension of SNAP benefits to eligible and qualified immigrants in the state.
SNAP Benefits for Immigrants
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits is designed to help low-income households buy nutritious foods and meet their daily needs. However, in most states, immigrants are left and are not included in the program due to their status.
In a published article in The Bay State Banner, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy signed a new bill that extends the SNAP benefits to immigrants in the state. The state allocated an amount of $6 million to all legal immigrants living in Massachusetts.

Different Groups Applaud the New Action
According to a published article in WBUR, Patricia Baker, a senior policy advocate at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, who had pushed for reforms, said, “We were very, very pleased that the Legislature understood the crisis going on.”
Furthermore, the specifics or criteria for eligibility for the extension of SNAP benefits for immigrants are still to be announced. The Department of Transitional Assistance will handle the program and will announce the changes to the system.
