Governor Applauds KSP for Successful Shutdown of Multi-Million Dollar Cargo Theft Operation

In a significant breakthrough, Governor Andy Beshear praised the Kentucky State Police (KSP) for their relentless commitment to shutting down an organized cargo theft ring following an 18-month investigation. The KSP’s Vehicle Investigations Branch, led by Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr., managed to recover over $5.2 million in stolen cargo, effectively curbing a crime spree that accounted for more than $10 million in theft.

The investigation, which spanned over 18 months, yielded remarkable results with the KSP launching 16 cargo theft investigations, resulting in the indictment of 10 individuals and the arrest of seven suspects. Cargo theft, defined as the illegal taking of goods during transportation, has become a growing concern within Kentucky, particularly within the food and beverage industry, as well as witnessing an uptick in copper theft incidents.

It was revealed that the KSP’s proactive approach to collaboration with various local, state, and federal agencies played a pivotal role in their success, with partnerships instrumental in recovering stolen shipments and leading to several arrests. Notably, the commendable efforts of Detective Steve Spurlock and Criminal Intel Analyst Gary Thomas from the Vehicle Investigations Branch were recognized during the Midwest Cargo Security Council Summit with prestigious awards for their exceptional contributions to the investigation.

Citing the sacrifices made by these individuals in the line of duty, he rallied the community to join him in acknowledging and praying for their continued safety and protection.

Overall, the successful outcome of this investigation stands as a testament to the KSP’s national leadership in combatting organized cargo theft, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding supply chains and mitigating substantial financial losses caused by such criminal activities.
