Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that Michigan will give tax credit return checks worth an average of $550 to about 700,000 households at the start of next year. The return program is only for people who qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2022, when the total income of all adults earning less than $59,187.
The groundbreaking project is the result of a law passed by the Democratic-led Legislature in March that raised the state tax credit from 6% of the federal amount to 30% of the federal amount. The checks are expected to speed up the planned growth of the tax credit, which will help workers and families with lower incomes.
Republican lawmakers stopped the legal process because of a larger debate over cutting taxes on income. The law, however, meant for Governor Whitmer’s administration to save money so that the money could be given back to people for the 2022 tax year.
