Eligible residents in New York can receive an amount of $1,407 in rebates under the ‘Enhanced STAR’ program at the end of this month, December 2023.
Rebate Checks in New York
Eligible households in New York can receive an amount of up to $1,407 on or before December 31, 2023. This will only happen if they switch the status of their School Tax Relief exemption program which will give them an exemption on a portion of school property taxes or a rebate check.
In a published article in The Washington Examiner, there are two types of STAR programs in New York: the School Tax Relief Program Basic and the Enhanced School Tax Relief. However, New Yorkers cannot avail themselves of both programs at the same time, but they can switch their program to the other if they are eligible.

Eligibility for the Rebate Checks
According to an article published in Newsweek, the Basic STAR exemption will appear on the eligible homeowner’s property tax bill. Moreover, eligible homeowners with incomes below $250,000, regardless of age, can qualify for this exemption. The average Basic STAR check in New York is $778.
Furthermore, the Enhanced STAR exemption provides a larger benefit to seniors who meet income and eligibility standards. Applicants must be 65 or older by Dec. 31 of the year of the exemption, but if the property is jointly owned, only one spouse or family member needs to be 65 by that date.
