Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was concerned about former President Trump‘s talk of revenge if reelected. He said America wants rebuilding, not revenge. While Democrats and some Republicans worry Trump will abuse his power to attack his enemies, McCarthy spoke. Trump’s remarks about being a “dictator for one day” to enforce border policies have raised these concerns.
Concerns Over Trump’s Rhetoric and Plans
On “CBS News Sunday Morning,” McCarthy stressed that President Trump’s campaign should focus on rebuilding, restoring, and renewing America rather than seeking revenge. McCarthy said Trump’s words shouldn’t inspire revenge if he wants to connect with Americans.
McCarthy acknowledged that Trump’s constant talk about retribution needed to stop when CBS News reporter Robert Costa challenged him. Costa noted that Trump had not backed down from his calls for retribution, raising concerns about Republican Party checks and balances.
McCarthy reiterated that Americans don’t want a retribution-driven presidency. He noted that a campaign to rebuild, restore, and renew the nation would likely be more popular.

Trump’s Desire for Power and Retribution
Trump’s recent comments about wanting to be a “dictator for one day,” primarily to address border issues and prioritize drilling, have raised concerns about his potential abuse of power if reelected. McCarthy, along with some Democrats and Republicans, worries Trump will target dissenters or opponents.
Trump initially sidestepped a question about power abuse in a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity but later joked about being a “dictator for one day.” His town hall remarks, and other comments have raised concerns about revenge and targeting perceived enemies if he returns to the White House in 2024.
