The US opposed a UN Security Council resolution asking for an immediate Israel-Hamas truce, with 13 states supporting and Britain abstaining. The two-month battle threatens the world, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The U.S. and Israel want interim halts to protect civilians and free Hamas hostages after an October 7 assault on Israel, not a truce. The U.S. dismissed the resolution as hasty, imbalanced, and useless. Deputy U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood said the UN resolution demanding a quick ceasefire was unsustainable and may escalate hostilities.
The US made major draft modifications, including denouncing the October 7 Hamas assault. The U.S. will negotiate prisoner releases and encourage Israel to safeguard Gazan civilians throughout its war against Hamas.
