Davis Gates, who is a strong opponent of private schools, sent her child to one in September, which caused a lot of criticism. She spoke out in favor of the choice, making a distinction between private schools and school freedom. Davis Gates said that the fact that her kids went to public schools made her support for public schools more legitimate. She told NBC Chicago, “I can’t speak out for public education without it taking root in my own home.”
