The St. Joseph County Police Department provided ABC57 with a brief update while they were on the air on Wednesday morning.
Gradual Lifting of St. Joseph County Police Jail Lockdown
On November 15th, the entire jail was placed under lockdown in preparation for security inspections. Beginning on Monday, November 27, the lockdown was beginning to be gradually removed one slice at a time. In an email, Troy Warner, who serves as the Public Information Officer for the St. Joseph County Police Department, stated that all portions of the jail were released from lockdown this morning. ABC57 also inquired with the department about the possibility of visits being canceled during that period, but they did not receive any information in response. Detainees’ families continued to submit ABC57 complaints concerning “inhumane conditions” at the County Jail, which included limited access to showers and detainees being locked in their cells for twenty-three hours a day. The lockdown from the County Jail was intended to begin gradually being lifted.
During that period, we were informed that convicts were permitted to continue attending court hearings, watching movies, and listening to music from within their cells; nevertheless, they were not permitted to gather in common areas around the facility. Several relatives of the family reached out to ABC57, requesting assistance; the majority of them expressed a desire to remain anonymous. In addition to the department’s assertion that the lockdown was implemented for security concerns, ABC57 is still seeking to determine the precise reason for the prolonged lockdown.
