After their principal and four other staff members were fired as officials investigated allegations of a transgender student playing on a girls’ volleyball team in violation of state law, dozens of South Florida high school students staged a walkout on Tuesday.
High School Student Protest for Pro-Transgender
Broward County’s Monarch High School hosted the protest. Local television footage shows a large gathering of students leaving school and congregating on campus. The school system relocated principle James Cecil, associate principal Kenneth May, athletic director Dione Hester, and information management technician Jessica Norton to non-school sites on Monday pending the inquiry. While the investigation continues for letting the transgender student play under the girls’ team, temporary athletic coach Alex Burgess was advised to wait. According to John Sullivan, a spokesman for the school system, they will continue to follow state law and will take appropriate action depending on the inquiry. They vow to provide a secure and inclusive learning environment for all kids.
Florida Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis signed legislation in 2021 banning transgender girls and women from playing on public school teams for girls from birth. At a Tuesday press conference, Broward Schools Superintendent Peter Licata claimed a community member complained about the student-athlete last week. When questioned by the media, Licata denied that the reassignments were related to the student and her parents’ lawsuit against the school. This month, a federal judge decided against the student.
