Snow Hits After the Thanksgiving Holiday

Forecasts predict a cross-country storm bringing snow and rain to most of the U.S. over the next few days might interrupt a busy holiday travel weekend.

Snow Storm in Some Areas

The National Weather Service issued weather alerts for almost 9 million Americans in 13 states from Idaho to Texas on Friday morning. Snowfall has reached 10 inches in Luther, Montana; 8.7 inches in Heyburn, Idaho; and 8 inches in Fishtail, Montana, in the Rocky Mountains and western Plains. Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming will continue to receive snow on Sunday due to the slow-moving system. On Friday morning, storm wind chills in Casper, Wyoming, were zero. Forecasts predict snow storms and rain to New Mexico to the south and snow showers to Nebraska and Kansas to the east.

Snow will fall mostly in Kansas, western Oklahoma, and the northern Texas panhandle on Saturday. Saturday afternoon snow may reach Kansas City and northern Missouri into the night. As the bottom of the system combines with warmer air, southern Missouri will get rain on Saturday. Telluride and the southwestern section of Colorado are predicted to get more than a foot of snow from the storm on Saturday. Saturday is forecast to bring 3–6 inches of snow to Nebraska, Kansas, and western Oklahoma.

Sunday—the busiest travel day of the year—will see the snowstorm system move east. Chicago will get snow Sunday morning and afternoon. The storm will soon hit Michigan, including Detroit. Rain is forecast to fall in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee on Sunday night as the system travels east and warms. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle will also see rain. The storm will hit the Northeast early Monday. Upper New England may see snow, but the remainder will get rain. Forecasts predict rain in New York City and the Interstate 95 corridor south of the city between midnight and 7 a.m. on Monday. Boston will have rain from 3 a.m. until noon. Inclement weather will continue once the storm system exits Maine around midnight on Tuesday. Forecasts predict lake effect snow on Tuesday for Cleveland, Erie, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Syracuse, New York.
