In New Hampshire, a former kid Scout leader and camp counselor was sentenced to a year in prison for sexually assaulting a kid in his group decades ago.
Sexual Abuse in Scouting
Michael Brady, 44, pled guilty on November 14 to a pattern of aggravated felonious sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to the Rockingham County attorney’s office. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison as part of a plea agreement, with a six- to 15-year prison sentence that will be postponed if he pays reparations to the victim and meets other conditions. Prosecutors claimed the assaults occurred in Kingston in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while Brady was the victim’s Boy Scout master and camp counselor. The now-adult victim’s “bravery and integrity” were lauded by County Attorney Patricia Conway, who said he “stood strong and determined to do the right thing in the face of adversity.”
Conway stated that the punishment reflects the fact that the case presented complications due to the passage of time. The plea and sentence come just weeks after the Boy Scouts of America appointed a new CEO. As the 113-year-old youth organization emerges from bankruptcy following a sexual abuse scandal, retired businessman Roger Krone said he hopes to reverse the trend of dropping membership and boost safety programs. In March, a federal judge affirmed the organization’s $2.4 billion bankruptcy plan, allowing it to continue operations while compensating more than 80,000 men who submitted claims alleging sexual assault while in scouting.
