Former Director of Sports Medicine Sentenced to Prison For 2 Years

According to CBS, a former director of sports medicine at San Jose State University (SJSU) was sentenced to 24 months in prison, one year of supervised release, a $15,000 fine, and reimbursement for sexually abusing female student-athletes in the guise of providing medical treatment.

Attorney General Kirsten Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division stated that the sentencing of the former director, Scott Shaw, sends a clear message that public school officials who exploit their authority and position to sexually abuse and harass students will face serious consequences.

Former Director Confessed of Crimes

According to the US Department of Justice, the former director, Scott Shaw, has admitted that between 2017 and 2020, he violated the civil rights of four students who played on women’s athletic teams by touching their chests and buttocks without consent and a legitimate medical purpose.

Moreover, the former director also confessed that he engaged in all the conduct that was described on SJSU’s campus, and as an SJSU former director, and athletic trainer – the female student-athletes only allowed him to have physical contact because of his status.
