House of Representatives Approved Pension Increase
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved the bill to increase the pensions of government and public school retirees. Democratic lawmakers supported the bill and all of them approved the total amount of $1.8 billion with a vote of 140-63.
In a published article in the Associated Press, this will now advance to the Senate-controlled state senate where it will face uncertainty. Some Republican lawmakers in the State House of Representatives strongly opposed the bill because it would bring financial burden to the taxpayers.

Republicans Opposed the Bill
According to a published article in the Meadville Tribune, Rep. Brad Roae, R-Crawford said that the legislation was “so expensive it cannot be funded in one year,” and could impact local property taxes as school districts have to shoulder the costs.
He also added, “Not to downplay anybody’s financial plight, but there are a lot of people that never worked for the state, never worked for the school district, that have much worse financial situations in retirement than retired school employees and state employees that we’re trying to help here.”
