According to a foreign ministry spokesperson, China will continue to support and encourage subnational and people-to-people exchanges with the US and hopes that the US will work with China to create favorable conditions and an atmosphere for subnational and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation.
National Diplomatic Ties
Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese government, made the statements during a regular press briefing in answer to a question regarding the fifth China-US Sister Cities Conference, which was recently held in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Wang said that sister city cooperation began when China and the United States established diplomatic ties and that the two nations have established 284 pairs of sister provinces/states and cities since 1979, providing substantial support for expanding China-US relations.
Since COVID-19, the Conference has been a major event in China-US sub-national and people-to-people exchanges, according to Wang, who added that the Conference and sideline events drew about 200 participants, including representatives from over ten Chinese provinces and cities and nearly 20 county supervisors and city mayors from 22 U.S. states. Under the subject “Build Green Cities for People,” participants engaged in in-depth discussions, shared experiences, explored prospects for collaboration, and achieved positive outcomes. The meeting represents the intense interest and energy in sub-national and people-to-people interactions, as well as the desire for friendly cooperation by people in both nations, Wang added.
