President Joe Biden and leaders from Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean committed Friday to enhance Western Hemisphere supply chains to challenge China and regional migration.
US To Strengthen Economic Bonds With Western Hemisphere
Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Mexico and Panama leaders visited Biden at the White House. The inaugural Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP) Leaders’ Summit resolved to boost clean energy, medical supply, and semiconductor supply chains to boost economic bonds. They also promised regional trade expansion. Biden began the meetings with hope despite the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Ukraine war.
He said the summit’s purpose was to “harness the incredible economic bonds and potential of the Americas and make the Western Hemisphere the most economically competitive region in the world,” contrasted with China’s lending policies. “We want to make sure that our closest neighbors know they have a real choice between debt-trap diplomacy and high-quality transparent approaches to infrastructure and inter-development,” stated Biden. Each leader will gather every two years, with Costa Rica hosting the next summit in 2025. Senior U.S. officials indicated they seek to reduce migrant arrivals by improving domestic economic possibilities.
