The Air Force has publicly stated that the new covert air-to-surface missile enhances the capabilities of the F-35 fighter jet making it stealthier.
The Dual Challenges of Stealth Technology in the F-35 Fighter Jet
According to Popular Science, the F-35 fighter jet is designed to excel in the field of missile warfare and is modeled in three different variants for each force: The Air Force uses the F-35A, the Marine Corps uses F-35B, and the Navy uses the F-35C.
With the F-35 fighter jet having three different variants, it has conflict with each other even though it has the same architecture and mission to eliminate enemy targets.
Due to the unique nature of stealth technology the F-35 fighter jet has, carrying weapons outside the plane can it make it more visible to the radar, while storing them internally can limit the fighter’s armament in battle.

Northrop Grumman Awarded $705 Million Contract for Advanced Air-to-Surface Missile Development of F-35 Fighter Jet
A contract worth up to $705 million has been awarded by the Air Force to defense company Northrop Grumman Defense Systems for the development of an advanced air-to-surface missile. The aim is to enhance the capabilities of the F-35 fighter jet, as reported by Warrior Maven.
The enhancement of the F-35 fighter jet with SiAW (Stand-in Attack Weapon) is significant as this serves as a warning and deterrent against potential hostilities, especially, in times of war, where the US will want to destroy as many defenses as much as possible.
