According to the source, multiple Colorado agencies and the Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI are investigating the alleged improper storage of more than 115 human bodies at the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Peace, 33 miles south of Colorado Springs. The investigation started after neighbors reported a foul odor in the area, Fremont County Sheriff Allen Cooper said. Investigators entered the 2,500 sq. foot building on Wednesday and made the horrific discovery when they found more than 115 human bodies.
Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller said more than 115 human bodies were improperly stored, which created a hazardous scene. Cooper said investigators worked late on Thursday night to determine the scope of the scene. The officials refused to provide details about what they found.
According to the source, investigators will use DNA and dental records to identify the remains. Officials said specialized disaster recovery teams wore protective gear to move remains to a controlled facility for identification. The investigators had contacted the funeral home owners, Jon Hallford and his wife, Carey. There are no details of how the remains were stored out of respect for the families. Cooper said it was a horrific discovery and very disturbing.
