A 42-year-old Adnan Syed’s murder conviction was vacated in 2022 after he served 23 years in jail, but Hae Min Lees’ family said they were not given proper notice to participate in the hearing.
Adnan Syed’s Murder Case
According to the source, the Maryland Supreme Court heard arguments on Thursday in the decadeslong legal saga of Adnan Syed over the victim’s family- whose killing is at the center of the case and was given enough time to participate in the hearing which judge vacated his conviction in 2022.
Adnan Syed served 23 years in jail after he killed his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The case of Adnan Syed got national attention and was followed by millions after the podcast “Serial” chronicled it in 2014. Thursday’s issues were the reinstatement of Adnan Syed’s murder conviction in March after a Maryland court said that the officials failed to provide sufficient notice for the victim’s family to attend the hearing, as well as to participate in such proceedings.
Adnan Syed’s attorneys have said his freedom could be at stake because of the death of Hae Min Lee, and the loss suffered by her family is unquestionably tragic. Lawyer Erica Suter said, “Also, the incalculable loss that Adnan Syed and his family suffered when he spent over half his life in jail for a crime he did not commit.” However, the victim’s family asked for their rights- “to have notice, to be present, and to be heard in a criminal justice proceeding.”
