Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley told reporters Tuesday that the boy shot two 13-year-olds at a leisure area outside Orlando after a Pop Warner football practice brawl. The chief said one adolescent was released from the hospital and the other was still being treated Tuesday. McKinley said one suffered an arm wound and the other a torso wound. The chief claimed the 11-year-old stole a revolver from his mother’s car’s unsecured box. McKinley said the child shot both teens.
McKinley said the 11-year-old was put into a juvenile assessment center on a preliminary allegation of second-degree attempted murder after police arrived at the property. McKinley said authorities are considering charging adults. McKinley said the video showed the teens ran when the gun was fired. The gun was legally owned, McKinley said. He claimed investigators don’t know what caused the youth fight.
The 11-year-old has no criminal record, the chief said. “We hope the 11-year-old gets the help he needs to make sure this isn’t a resolution for his life,” McKinley added. “He’s 11. Long life awaits him. He can fix things.” Apopka Pop Warner said it was “deeply saddened by this event” and prayed for the families. The group stated Tuesday’s practices were canceled, counseling will be given, and parent meetings will be held on Wednesday.
