Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov compared the Golan Heights and Ukraine’s war-torn Donbas, suggesting that the United States does not respect the legal sovereignty of UN member states.

According to an article by Tal Spungin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov charged- “The United States was hypocritical in its recognition of the Golan Heights as part of sovereign Israel.” He compared the Golan Heights and Ukraine’s war-torn Donbas, thinking that the US does not respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all UN member states. In his press conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was asked to respond to comments made by the US representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s vow to protect territorial integrity in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov read out a foreign ministry statement that stated- “Donbas is important to Russia’s Security as long as NATO is still in Ukraine, it will remain important to Russia’s security.” Then, he juxtaposed that statement by quoting comments made by Antony Blinken- “The Golan is very important to Israel’s security.”
Golan is very important to Israel’s security as long as Assad is in power in Syria and Iran is still in Syria, militia groups backed by Iran, the Assad regime itself- all of these pose is important security threat to Israel. Also, the Palestinian issues already have resolutions from both the Security Council and the General Assembly.
