U.S. Department of Human Services says the change will go into effect on October 1. October marks the beginning of a rise in SNAP payments for millions of Americans.
SNAP Payment Increase Due to Cost of Living Price Hike
The purpose of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, sometimes known as SNAP, is to give low-income families more money for groceries, enabling them to purchase wholesome and necessary items. A lot of people still refer to it as “food stamps” even though it was formerly known as the food stamp program. Each family’s share is based on the size of the household and the cost of living in the United States. All SNAP payments will increase as a result of a recent cost of living adjustment approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The program’s administrator, the U.S. Department of Human Services, states that the change will go into effect on October 1. Forbes Advisor claims that benefits will increase by 12.5% over the course of a year. Benefits will be reevaluated under the scheme after September 30, 2024, taking inflation and living expenses into account. In all 48 contiguous states plus Washington, D.C., the maximum SNAP benefit for an individual is currently $291, while the allotment for a family of four is $973.
Based on the number of individuals living together, the maximum monthly amount that each household will get is broken down as follows:
Individuals – $291
Two persons – $535
Three persons – $766
Four persons – $973
Five persons: $1,155
Six persons = $1,386
Seven persons = $1,532
Eight persons = $1,751
Starting in October, a household’s SNAP payments will increase by $219 for each extra member.
