US Consistently Loses on Global Opinion To Russia and China
According to an article by Matthew Tostevin, the United States is consistently losing out on global opinion to Russia and China in getting other countries to align with its views. The analysis is based on the situational awareness of the US when appears increasingly at odds with both the world’s other major nuclear-armed countries as Russia continues its war against Ukraine and as the growth in China might see it rivaling the US as the preeminent military power in East Asia and potentially beyond. Russia and China are both veto-holding members of the UN Security Council that consistently challenged the US dominance that emerged after the Cold War.
The assistant professor, Dmitriy Nurullayev, said that Russia and China have increased the affinity of swatches of the international community, especially in the Global South. Nurullayev and Mihaela Papa assimilated data on voting patterns of countries at the United Nations to look at over 1,500 cases between 1991 and 2020 where Russia and China both disagreed with the US. Their view prevailed 86% of the time. The alignment with US was greater at 36% when the analysis considered only the 211 resolutions that the US State Department had designated as being significant to national interests.
The ability of Russia and China has been enhanced by membership in groups- such as the BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), Shanghai Cooperation (Groups Russia and China with India), and the G-77 group of emerging economies (Across Asia, Africa, and Latin America). Recently it was agreed to invite Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to join next year. The US has much to boast about- such as a highly skilled workforce, extremely favorable geographic location, and high standards of living. The United States should focus on strengthening its democratic institutions at home, creating a highly educated and sophisticated population at home, and making America an attractive destination for both economic and intellectual capital. Also, it should focus on creating sustainable relations with its allies and work with China on issues of mutual interest such as climate change.
